Stage Play
The president of the Magnolia Garden Club finds her life upended when a childhood friend returns to Natchez, Mississippi and purchases the Goldenrod mansion, pulling it from the Garden Club’s valued pilgrimage tours. Revisiting their pasts forces the women, including the ghost trapped in the Sitting Room, to face decisions made in the past that block them today.
TAMMY SUE
Why would you move back here?
LUZANNA
Natchez has so many memories for me, as does this house.
TAMMY SUE
You hated it here!
LUZANNA
I didn’t say good memories.
YELLOW DUCHESS
I was lying right there, feeling poorly, and the light came for me but I missed it. It was a long time ago.
LUZANNA
(preparing to use her phone)
Listen, I’m going call someone to take you home.
YELLOW DUCHESS
But, wait. Oh, my! You hear and see me?
LUZANNA
Uh yeah. Loud and clear, and I want you to leave!
YELLOW DUCHESS
(ecstatic)
Finally! You’ve been sent to help me get the light back. I’ve been trapped in this room for so long. I want to move on!
LUZANNA
(into her cell)
Hello? I need a ride for um … someone … at the Goldenrod…
YELLOW DUCHESS
You are not listening to me! You must bring back the light!
The Duchess gestures angrily and a strong wind knocks Luzanna off balance, and she drops the phone. Luzanna finally understands the situation and screams. The Duchess looks behind herself to see why Luzanna is screaming.
LUZANNA
Oh my god. You’re a ghost!
YELLOW DUCHESS
I’m not a ghost! I’m a divine spiritual essence.
